A minimalist's Pratipattisāraśataka

The second half of the Pratipattisāraśataka survives in the codex specified below. I know of no other available manuscripts for this work and as far as I know this fragment has not hitherto received any attention. The author is reputedly (an) Āryadeva*; for the Tibetan see Tōh. 2334; for a commentary by one Herukadeva see Tōh. 2335. The emendations offered here are of an ad-hoc nature, they do not reflect a deep reading of the text, or the translation, or the commentary.

*For the time being I distinguish three Āryadevas: i) the author of the CMP and perhaps the CVP; ii) the Catuṣpīṭha Āryadeva with several works; iii) the present, post-Hevajra Āryadeva.

As far as publications go you are probably right. I read the same MS about 10 years ago (I find a note that I acquired a copy in May 2000)—like you doing so rather rapidly, and without trying to solve all the problems, or read the Tibetan translation in parallel. I don't have images to hand now, in South India; but here are a few comments/suggestions based on my old transcription (it must be borne in mind that I tend to transcribe MSS less scrupulously than you do, and there may be a few unreported emendations—for instance, I have in my transcription in x+2 and x+6 -vadhānataḥ as suggested by SDV, but not marked as emendations). The following notes/suggestions are of course by no means exhaustive.

Read -kāraikyam (cf. your emendation in x+1)?

In x+8 emend(/normalize?) saṃvṛttir to saṃvṛtir ?

In x+10 yatroddiśyate is unmetrical; I transcribed yad atroddiśyate, not marked as an emendation.

In x+11 I judged ye cāsau niḥsvabhāvatā to be corrupt and conjectured/emended yā cāsau niḥsvabhāvatā.

Probably not possible. Perhaps divide vikalpya te ?

bimbabhāvatā in x+18 should I think be emended to niḥsvabhāvatā, if the MS does not read that (I have transcribed as so reading, or silently emended).

In x+19, kārak<|au|>opamatādṛśam is rather problematic. I conjectured (not silently, this time...), a decade ago, kārako 'pi sa tādṛśaḥ (= x+21b), and though I am not sure that it is the best solution, I still see none better.

svapneṣu se[!]mastadharmeṣu Read, also for the metre, svapne samastadharmeṣu, as in the parallel [borrowing?/source?!] Saṃvarodayatantra 33.15. (Not the only verse shared between this text and the Saṃvarodayatantra; there are interesting parallels/borrowings—one way or another—between our text and other texts too, which
you have not pointed out, and which I also shall not be trying to list here.)

In x+26 where you wrote ānanda[ṃ] you probably meant to write ānanda[ḥ] ?

In x+33 nirbhī --> nirbhī[r].

In x+34 yūthagatrāsti --> pṛthag atrāsti (as I transcribed or silently emended).

In x+37 deho dbhantir[?] is certainly a problem. Tentative conjecture: perhaps deho dhvanir ?

In x+39 mukhayanti --> sukhayanti (as I transcribed or silently emended).

In x+40 saṃvṛttivyatirekena --> saṃvṛtivyatirekeṇa.

In x+44, where you have ānande [']pi, I transcribed or emended silently ānando [']pi, which is probably better.

There was also a probably 11th-century Brahmin Aaryadeva who was maternal uncle of Padampa Sanggyé. There's an early modern Tibetan discussion about the three Aaryadevas in a history of the Cutting (Gcod) lineage. Maybe I can look it up. Oh, here it is:

The source is this:

Rdza sprul Ngag dbang bstan 'dzin nor bu (1867-1940), Gcod yul nyon mongs zhi byed bka' gter bla ma brgyud pa'i rnam thar byin rlabs gter mtsho, Sonam T. Kazi (Gangtok 1972).

At least I think it's of some interest to see here a Tibetan writer discussing these kinds of problems that come from the fact that so many Indian Buddhists went on to use the names of their best-known predecessors.

The Brahmin with the name Aaryadeva was a South Indian monk who stayed at Vikramaśīla.
